Paper punch cards vs digital loyalty cards: should you switch?
By The Digicard team · Published 15 Oct 2026 · Facts checked
The short answer
For a café with 300 regulars a month, paper punch cards cost about US$66 a year to print, and Digicard wallet cards US$72. In the Philippines it is ₱2,700 against ₱4,032 with VAT.
So the printing bill is not the reason to switch. Switch when lost cards, faked stamps or not knowing who your regulars are cost you more than that difference. Stay on paper if your program is small and informal and you never plan to message anyone.
What you gain is in the feature table: a card that can't be forgotten or faked, a page where each customer sees their stamps, a scanner that keeps working offline and can undo a mistake, and a record you can correct with a reason.
And paper never tells you anything. Digicard keeps a record for every customer, a simple built-in CRM, and an analytics dashboard that shows who is new, who keeps coming back and who has stopped.

What paper costs you that the printer does not charge
- Forgotten cards. A customer who left their card at home either loses the stamp or gets a second card, and now has two half-full ones.
- Faked stamps. A rubber stamp or hole punch is easy to copy, and staff can't tell.
- No customer list. At the end of the year you don't know who your regulars are, how often they come, or who stopped coming. Digicard keeps each customer's visits and rewards, and its analytics dashboard counts returning and dormant customers for you.
- No way to reach anyone. You can't tell a customer their reward is waiting, or that you have a new menu.
- Reprints. Changing the reward or the design means throwing away the cards you have.
What you give up by leaving paper
- Customers without a smartphone need a paper fallback.
- Staff scan with a phone instead of reaching for a stamp. Digicard's scanner runs in the browser and keeps working through a dropped connection.
- A one-off print run becomes a monthly bill, though with Digicard it only counts customers who used their card that month.
What switching takes
- Design the card. Add your logo and colours and set the reward, for example 10 stamps for a free drink.
- Put the QR code on the counter. Digicard generates a printable counter board from your branding, or detects the QR code in your own artwork.
- Carry over stamps. When a regular adds the wallet card, staff add the stamps from their paper card, with a note. If you already have a member list, from plastic membership cards for example, we can import it so each person claims a card that is already in their name.
- Run both for a few weeks. Keep honouring paper cards, stop handing new ones out, and keep a few for customers without a smartphone.

Questions
Are digital loyalty cards more expensive than paper punch cards?
A little, on printing alone. For a café with 300 regulars a month, paper costs about US$66 a year to print in the US and Digicard wallet cards US$72. In the Philippines it is ₱2,700 against ₱4,032 including VAT.
Can customers keep the stamps from their paper card?
Yes. When a customer adds the wallet card, staff can add the stamps from their paper card in the Digicard dashboard, with a note saying why, then keep the paper card.
What about customers who do not have a smartphone?
Keep a stack of paper cards for them. A wallet card needs an iPhone with Apple Wallet or an Android phone with Google Wallet.
Can I see who my regulars are?
Not with paper: a punch card records nothing about who holds it. With Digicard every cardholder has a customer record (the details they gave when they joined, their balance, their rewards and every visit), and the analytics dashboard shows new cards, returning customers, rewards redeemed and cards that have gone quiet, by branch. The owner can download the whole customer list as a spreadsheet.
Do customers need to download an app?
No. They scan a QR code at the counter and add the card to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, which are already on their phone.
Can I send push notifications to customers?
Yes, with a wallet card or an app; not with paper. Digicard puts a message on one customer’s card or on every cardholder’s card, and the phone shows it as a notification. SMS and email campaigns are planned.
How we compared this
Prepared by The Digicard team. Digicard sells wallet loyalty cards, so read this as a vendor's comparison: every competitor price below links to the vendor's own pricing page and the day we checked it. If a price has changed, tell us at support@digicard.tech and we will correct the page.
Features
- Competitors' features come from their own pricing and product pages, linked below. “Not stated” means the page didn't say, not that the feature is missing.
- Digicard's “Yes” means it is live today. “Planned” means we are building it and it is not available yet.
- “Your own app” can do almost anything if you pay to build it, so most of its cells say so rather than Yes or No.
The businesses we priced
- One café: 1 location, 300 customers using their card each month, 600 customers carded over the year.
Assumptions
- Costs are for the first 12 months, using each vendor's month-to-month price. Most offer a discount for paying a year up front.
- Paper: 1.5 cards printed per carded customer a year (everyone gets one; half need another because theirs filled up or got lost). Stamps, punches and staff time are not counted.
- Your own app: an agency's published build estimate plus Apple and Google developer fees. Hosting, maintenance, updates and marketing the download are not counted, and they are ongoing.
- Wallet platforms: the cheapest plan that covers the number of locations. PassKit is priced with one staff login per location, with every card issued during the year still on file.
- Digicard: billed on Active Cards, the cards with at least one stamp, reward or message in the month. Philippine prices include 12% VAT; US prices are before sales tax, which varies by state.
- Currency: each vendor's own billing currency is exact. The other column is converted at ₱62.756 = US$1, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas reference exchange rate on 25 Sep 2026.
